MEDEA CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL AND OAK PARK HIGH SCHOOL NAMED

2013 CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today named 218 public middle and high schools California Distinguished Schools for their strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement.

“These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college,” Torlakson said. “Given the enormous challenges schools have faced in recent years, it is inspiring to see this kind of success in so many schools. Our future depends on meeting the needs of every student no matter where they come from or where they live.”

This is the 6th time MCMS has received this recognition and the 4th time for OPHS.  On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to commend the teachers of these schools for their innovation, hard work, and caring attitude toward the students they serve.  I would also like to express my gratitude to the parents who generously support the schools with their resources and time.  Additionally, it is appropriate to recognize the principals, Brad Benioff and Kevin Buchanan for their exemplary leadership as well as their assistant administrators, counselors, and support staff.

This year was the cycle for secondary schools and nominees were required to select Signature Practices to highlight in their applications and to be evaluated on.

Medea Creek chose 21st Century Classrooms and Differentiated Instruction in Physical Education. Oak Park High School selected Serving Students with Disabilities and Student Support Programs: Safe School Ambassadors, Peer Counseling, and the Senior Life Skills Retreat.

I commend the schools for highlighting these programs, which we consider to be essential components to a well-rounded and holistic educational experience for all students.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Please don't bring your dogs onto any school grounds in Oak Park at any time without permission in advance from the school principal.  The 2 main reasons are because children step in dog waste at recess and because children have been snapped at by dogs during school hours.

With regards to our beautiful parks in Oak Park...
Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times.
If you want to run your dog off leash the only place in Oak Park is the Oak Park Dog Park.

Please be responsible and pick up after your dog.
